Dallas is a northwestern suburb of Atlanta, located approximately 30 miles from downtown. It is named for George M. Dallas, Vice President of the United States of America, serving under James K. Polk.
Dallas was not widely known until it served as the sight of several battles during the Atlanta Campaign of the American Civil War. In late May and early June of 1864, three battles were fought in Dallas: The Battle of New Hope Church, The Battle of Pickett’s Mill, and The Battle of Dallas.
The Pickets Mill Battlefield historic site is one of the best-preserved Civil War battlefields in the nation. Visitors can travel roads used by Federal and Confederate troops and see earthworks constructed by these men.
The City of Dallas purchased over 175 acres that contain a portion of the land where the Battle of Dallas was fought on May 28, 1864. The Dallas Battlefield Park at Scott Smith Preserve is designed to protect both the historical and natural assets of the area for generations to come.
Dallas is also home to a portion of the Silver Comet Trail. The Silver Comet Trail, named for the Silver Comet passenger train that traversed the same route from 1947-1969, begins in Smyrna, Georgia and travels west through Cobb, Paulding and Polk counties and continues as Alabama’s Chief Ladiga Trail at the Alabama state line. The Silver Comet and Chief Ladiga trails join to form one continuous 94-mile trail from Smyrna, Georgia to Anniston, Alabama, which together form the second longest rail trail in the U.S.
